FPMA Legislative Tour 2012 a Great Success!
On February 20-21, FPMA members met to reach out to their Representatives and Senators to educate them on the environmental benefits of properly maintained turf and urban landscapes-the FPMA Legislative Tour 2012 in Tallahassee provided face-to-face opportunities to meet elected officials.
The traditional Sapp-Walkup Cookout at the historic Goodwood Museum and Carriage House saw over 80 members and guests that met for fellowship and fun. On Tuesday morning at the Breakfast Briefing, Dr. Marion Aller, Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture, Senator Charlie Dean, Representative Jimmie Smith (sponsors of FPMA-supported legislation in the 2010 and 2011 sessions) and Jose Gonzales, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Associated Industries of Florida (to which FPMA belongs), brought messages on relevant happenings in legislation and regulation. Attendees then left for the capitol to meet with their respective legislators in personal visits in their Tallahassee offices.
According to Government Affairs Chairman Bryan Cooksey, the time in Tallahassee is an investment in the future of the industry; he and President George Braker encouraged everyone to stay engaged in the legislative process. They thanked Presenting Sponsor Univar, Breakfast Briefing Sponsor BASF, Cookout Sponsors Florida Pest Control, Dow AgroSciences and Forshaw Distribution, and Transportation Sponsors Bayer, Bell Labs and Pest-PAC for making the event possible.

Florida Water Quality Coalition
As the only pest management member of the Florida Water Quality Coalition, FPMA helped fund a report on the negative economic impacts posed by the imposition of EPA's Numeric Nutrient Criteria. FPMA and its coalition partners of other professions and local governments opposed the federal standards as job-killing, scientifically unsupported and practically unattainable. With the pressure of the Coalition, leaders in Tallahassee and the Florid delegation in Washington, EPA temporarily deferred the imposition the NNC.

FPMA will continue to monitor the progress of federal standards and will report on the results of Florida Water Quality Coalition efforts.

UF IFAS has updated and reposted the "Unintended Consequences" document regarding urban nutrient management on its website: Click here.
