Governor Scott Proclaimed April as Pest Management Month, Recognizes FPMA
Governor Rick Scott has issued a proclamation naming April as Pest Management Month in Florida and recognizing FPMA for protecting the health and property of Floridians and their concern for environmental protection.

Second annual Charity Golf Ball Drop Raises $5000 for the Florida Pest Management Foundation
The second annual Charity Golf Ball Drop, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, help during the 2012 Florida Pest and Lawn Care Expo golf tournament at MetroWest Golf Club, raised over $5000 for the Florida Pest Management Foundation. The Florida Pest Management Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit corporation that will receive, administer and expend funds for educational, research, charitable and scientific purposes. Those purposes will include:
1. To solicit and receive grant proposals from EPA, NPMA Foundation and other organizations; to issue funding from grant proposals received from research, education and charitable groups to address pest management-specific problems.
2. To provide education to the public on the importance of pest management in protecting health, property and food supplies, and the role the profession plays in sustaining economic viability.
3. To award scholarships to qualifying candidates in their studies of entomology, ecology and related life and environmental sciences, and to advance the education and training of members of the pest management profession for professional development
4. To provide assistance to members of the pest management professional in times of natural disasters.
The Foundation is an independent organization with its own incorporators, Board of Directors and advisory structure determined by its leadership and shares offices with the Florida Pest Management Association. The Foundation is self-funded through the endowments, grants and fundraising proceeds it receives. Donations to the FPMA are tax exempt as a charitable donation and can be directed to specific educational, research and disaster relief efforts.

Florida Water Quality Coalition
As the only pest management member of the Florida Water Quality Coalition, FPMA helped fund a report on the negative economic impacts posed by the imposition of EPA's Numeric Nutrient Criteria. FPMA and its coalition partners of other professions and local governments opposed the federal standards as job-killing, scientifically unsupported and practically unattainable. With the pressure of the Coalition, leaders in Tallahassee and the Florid delegation in Washington, EPA temporarily deferred the imposition the NNC.

Florida Pest Management Association now has a Facebook "fan" page!
The page on the social networking site features association events, website addresses, photographs and videos of fellow Pest Management Professionals The Facebook page will be used to transmit association news and drive traffic to the FPMA web site (www.flpma.org); social network sites are the latest in new technology marketing, are free to set up and use, and will be a featured topic at the upcoming Pest and Lawn Care Expo, January 18-21, 2011 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando.

UF IFAS has updated and reposted the "Unintended Consequences" document regarding urban nutrient management on its website: Click here. This document details the possible damage to water quality caused by stressed and poorly nourished turf that cannot capture nutrient and pollutant runoff; the stress can occur during "blackout periods" of nitrogen applications during the summer growth season.
